Description

Active chemical: spironolactone.

Aldactone belongs to the potassium-saving diuretic subgroup. It acts on the hormone aldosterone, which regulates the body’s water balance, accelerates the excretion of potassium and prevents the strong excretion of sodium and water. The higher the aldosterone level, the more water accumulates in the body. Spironolactone is an aldosterone antagonist, its use helps to reduce the level of aldosterone in the body and thereby increase the excretion of sodium and water, which simultaneously leads to the accumulation of potassium. With the help of spironolactone (here it is more often sold under the name “Veroshpiron”), we cannot accumulate potassium in the body. Like other diuretics, it also removes potassium from the body. Just in smaller quantities. Therefore, it is called a potassium-sparing diuretic. There is a slight loss of potassium, but it is relatively easy to compensate for compared with the loss of potassium, which we have seen, say, from thiazide diuretics. Therefore, along with similarly acting Triamterene (Direnium) and Amiloride (Midmor), aldactone constitute a group of potassium-saving diuretics that act on the body much more “softer” than other diuretic groups — thiazides and “looped agents” (saluretics).

What departures taking Aldactone (or other potassium-sparing diuretics) should certainly pay attention to is that, in parallel, you cannot take chemical preparations of potassium, because this can lead to a life-threatening increase in the level of potassium in the body.

It should be noted that Aldactone also has antiandrogenic qualities, as a result of which it lowers the level of androgens in the blood. Bodybuilders use this property of Edakton in order to minimize the effects of muscularization during steroid “courses”, as well as to restore femininity after them. Men have another problem: the ratio of androgens-estrogens changes in favor of the placenta; frequent phenomena accompanying the taking of Aldactone in men are painful swelling of the nipples right up to gynecomastia.

Other possible adverse effects associated with taking Aldactone are: low blood pressure, muscle cramps, dizziness, gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, irregular pulse, weakness. However, the side effects of potassium-sparing diuretics compared with thiazides and “loop agents” are much less pronounced.
